Application of Financial Holds

Students that do not meet payment deadlines timely will be subject to having their accounts placed on financial hold.

A financial hold is a restriction that is placed on any account that has a past due balance with Office of Student Accounts. Please note that students may have holds from other offices such as Parking or Judicial Affairs. In these instances, please contact the appropriate office to resolve the hold. Students can view the contact information when checking the status of their holds through STAR.

Effect of Financial Holds

Financial holds preclude students from receiving University services including:
  • Registration
  • Drop/Add
  • Grades
  • Transcript requests
  • Graduation

Financial holds can only be released if the outstanding balance is paid in full. Once payment has been made in full, the hold will be released automatically on the next business day. Payment can be made electronically via STAR by credit card (Visa, Mastercard, or Discover) or by electronic check. We are pleased to announce that we now accept American Express and Diner's Club, but for web payments only. You can also pay in person by cash, check, credit card, money order, or cashier's check.

For students with third-party sponsorships, payment is not guaranteed until funds have actually been received by the University. Students that are on hold for a delinquent sponsor payment should contact their sponsor directly. WVU will need to be in receipt of that payment from the sponsor before the hold can be lifted.

Students signing up for the TuitionPay Plan through Sallie Mae will be subject to financial hold if not properly budgeted, according to the policy above.

For any accounts that have been sent to a collection agency, the student will need to contact the agency to make payment in full. WVU cannot accept payment for accounts that have been sent for collection, nor can WVU release the hold until the original balance, plus the collection charge has been paid in full to the collection agency. Accounts on hold that have been sent for collection will be updated once a month with a payment file from the appropriate agency. Therefore, the release of the hold will not happen immediately, even after payment has been made in full to the collection agency.

Overawarded financial aid recipients that have loans, grants, or scholarships rescinded will also be placed on financial hold according to the policy above. Repayment of these monies are due in full immediately to the University.

Please contact our customer service line at (304) 293-4006 or e-mail us at OSA@mail.wvu.edu for additional questions regarding financial holds.
